Laminated Transformer

Transformers for use convert the power step up or step down at normal line frequency i.e. 50Hz. In these transformers, cores are made of high permeability silicon steel i.e. CRNO. The steel has a permeability many times that of free space and the core thus serves to greatly reduce the magnetizing current and confine the flux to a path which closely couples the windings. It is constructed by stacking layers of thin steel laminations and each lamination is insulated from its neighbors by a thin non-conducting layer of insulation. One common design of laminated core is made from interleaved stacks of E-shaped steel sheets capped with I-shaped pieces, leading to its name of 'E-I transformer.
